Hi there to anybody that can hear me...
(My disclaimer...I am an astrology novice so forgive the weakness in my vernacular.) I just discovered (in digging up some old charts), that I have Saturn in the sign of Cancer and in the 12th house. Could someone help me understand in a nutshell what this means?
In gratitude...
V.

It's only in water times 1 - Cancer, which, unfortunately is Saturn's detriment, so it's not very good. Saturn joys in 12, many say because Saturn is misery and so is much of the 12th house, that's why.
There's another school of thought, though, which I rather like: Since the 12th house rules secret enemies, do you really want a strong malefic in it? It would make your enemies very competent and effective. Whereas a weak malefic will make them trip over their own feet, and therefore less harmful to you.
You also need to look at what houses Saturn rules, and its aspects, of course.

12th House Saturn This means that's issues of regulation, rules, structure, and so forth are dealt with in the 12th House areas of your life (Consequences, unconscious patterns, escapism, and...as you point out... hidden enemies (including yourself)). This can make you prone to deep rooted issues of guilt, fear of the unknown or fear of looking unprepared, and a fear that others are out to get you.
The sign a planet is in describes the way this might appear in your life. Being in Cancer - this places it in a very emotional position. This position can make you tend towards confrontation with a family-like emotional dependency on the approval of others.

I am getting limitations and restrictions ,authority figures, Fatherly, Apathey, Selfishness, sorrow, self-pity, manipulation and emotionality, maternalism Exile, Inhibitions, Sorrow(again), places of confinement.
This can go several ways. There could be a hidden sadness over Father emprisioned or otherwise abscent. Could also go with personal confinement over matters odf depression. Also a career in helping others in "facilities" helping others through thier depressions.
Without a complete chart, will be hard to pin it down.

Hi V,
As someone already mentioned, Saturn in Cancer is in detriment. This isn't necessarily bad, it just means that Saturn needs a little help from other planets to express itself. For example, if your Saturn has any squares from planets in Libra or Aries or oppositions from planets in Capricorn that would help immensely, as it would compel you to 'do' your Saturn and face your Saturn issues until you get them right, which can ultimately be rewarding.
The good news is that Saturn is in its Joy in the 12th (which I think somebody already mentioned). Saturn in the 12th can help to provide some very useful boundaries and structures around all the usual 12th house issues, which under normal circumstances can be hard to pin down and work with. It's not uncommon to find Saturn in the 12th in the charts of leaders (Barack Obama for instance) - there is the 12th house sense of surrender and sacrifice, but to nobly serve a higher cause.
How many degrees is Saturn from your Ascendant? If it's 5 degrees or less, than I would count that as Saturn rising and look at it as a 1st house planet as well as or even instead of a 12th house planet.
I hope that helps. Mandi
