I have a tradtion that I do each new years season. I order up a blank deck and then spend the month of january making a tarot deck. Sometimes I draw them out with a black sharpie, sometimes I use an artist ink pen sometimes I use colored sharpies, sometimes I use pastels and then laquer them, sometimes I cut pictures from magazines and scan to shrink and do a collage.
As soon as they are done Natalia scoffs them up bags them and places them in a hidden place that she thinks I don't know about, roflmao. She is a deadly traditionalist and many times critisises my "free flowing bull s*it". But she keeps them all and has since we were married 10 years ago...the ones prior to that I got to keep in box. I have one deck I did many years ago on birch bark with a wood burner. Very Koldun traditional.
So I am just wondering? Have any of you ever created a deck?

Not exactly. Years ago, there was this idea that a deck you make yourself is 'more powerful', lol, this bit of lore made it into a lot of the old Tarot books. A friend of mine started copying the RWS and got overwhelmed, she hired me to help. I've never made an original Tarot deck, but I was making oracle sets last year. I burned them on mesquite slices, very folk arty. Sold about half a dozen and the market was tapped, lol. I'll look for a link.

I have never been one to believe that a deck you create yourself holds more "power" then any other deck. I do however think that creating a deck is a good thing to do. It does force you to consider other things than yourself. I have been doing this for a number of years, and it has helped me to get a deeper understanding of individual cards.
AND? It is so much fun, especially when that last one is done......lol.

I've been working on it since 1998. The problem? I'm a bit of a perfectionist...

Natalia says I am into "free flowing bulls*t". I think when I started this years ago it was like a seasonal thing? took months to do? The reason I posted this was I just completed the deck for this year. Granted I started it shortly after Thanksgiving? Or there abouts....My point is this year was faster then most.

PLEASE do not take offence to this but the very first thought that grabbed my mind when you wrote this post? From 1998? to 2010? Was there is a difference between "perfectionist" and anal....lol. Seroiusly, you need to finish it. A finished deck is a great feeling. Even if all you do is pack it away in a box. PLEASE do not be offended by this.

I have no real artistic talent so I shudder to think about what I would create! LOL

I suspect that one day? Natalia will find a printer and publish my decks. I think she views it as some kind of 401K plan.

I'm curious Tak...
Have you ever taken the opportunity to go back through those old decks. I like to write short stories and often do this with them. Most of the time I end up thinking to myself...WTH!?! lolol. Some of the stuff I wrote as a teenager is particularly perplexing. It may end up being like poetry though. With this I tend to find similar subject matter that fits well together. Sort of like a puzzle with pieces that are found through time. Who knows, you may end up combining them in a way that will become one of the most prolific decks ever created.

shhhhhh! That is why I am stashing them away. I understand my husband's artistic voice better then he does.
